6 Tips to Survive Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is the perfect time of year to count our blessing and the perfect excuse to over indulge in yummy food that we only prepare once a year. But as much as we enjoy the recipes and the traditions, the holiday season can cause anxiety and stress, especially which it comes to family, alcohol and extra calories. Here are 6 tips to help you survive Thanksgiving:

Get Dressed Up! There is some truth to “dressing for success” especially in situations that might be emotionally challenging. Nothing brings out the best in family like the holidays! Instead of wearing the baggy, comfy clothes to dinner, why not get dressed up? Put on your favorite dress or suit and tie to boost your confidence and the fitted clothes just might help you avoid overeating.

Eat Before You Go: This one might sound a little odd, but eating a small meal before the big fest, especially if you opt for the greens, could help you minimize your calorie consumption.

Pick Your Favorites First: We all have our favorite Thanksgiving faire that we only have once a year. Don’t waste your calories on foods that aren’t on the top of your “must have” on Thanksgiving Day.

Be Colorful! Use plates and serving dishes that are bright and colorful. Research has found that the more contrast on your plate the less likely you are to overeat – plus they are festive!

Volunteer to Clean Up: no one likes that awkward transition between dinner and dessert, especially when we are dealing with family. Keep yourself busy by volunteering to help clean up. An added bonus is the calories you’ll burn off.

Opt for Low-Calorie Drinks: nothing fuels the fire at family functions like alcohol. Instead of tipping back the bottle, opt for non-alcoholic beverages like sparkling water or fun fruit fusion drinks. You will avoid the hang over and all the calories from the booze.
